This youngster came to us from Liam Dowling in Ireland known as Ballymac Coby. He would keep Coby as his kennel name but be known as Noduff Tropicana on the racecard. He already caused a stir, arriving at 3am and having to spend his first night in the UK at trainer Chris Fereday’s home!
Coby commenced his grading trials with a sprint in January 2024 followed by clear successes in three dog four bend trials. We predicted a race debut in A5….. We were right and he duly won at the second attempt. First time up in A4 and he won again. It was becoming clear that he needed to lead or turn very close to the pace and that, if he did, not many would get past him.
That sequence was only broken in a very high class A4 when Coby led to near the line only to be fetched out whilst still going under the 29 second barrier. He would surely fill out and stay better with age so the future continued to look bright.
By September 2024 Coby had won on eight occasions and had worked his way up to A2, albeit yet to win and reach top grade. His trapping remained inconsistent with remarkable 4.26 and 4.28 sectionals interspersed with 4.50s! He started to stay on more and more strongly, even winning from behild. What time would he do if getting it right at both ends? We decided the time was right to see how he would fare over six bends….
